This installation was inspired by almost a year of conversations about generating music based on motion; the motion of an individual, of a team of players, of patrons in a restaurant. We had just started hosting a new monthly art show and the installation was done in our newly acquired creative space, formerly a venue named Boombap.
It was a simple prototype, just a laptop with a webcam hooked up to speakers, and there wasn't much in our new space to draw people in. So we put a light above a chair, prompting people to enter the space and sit. When they did, the webcam would register their movement and begin playing music. The music of their motion and a big empty room encouraged a lot of creative movements.
Having a few dozen people come in and play around was a great space-warming party, encouraging many more months of installations, interactions, and connections.
